ANIMAL WELFARE AND SUSTAINABILITY
At the Heyde Hoeve we have chosen to keep our pigs sustainable. This means that we keep the pigs in a respectful, animal-friendly way in our modern stables. The pigs have sufficient space and a separate lying, eating, drinking and manure place. Our carers play a big role when it comes to the welfare of the pigs. Our pigs receive a handful of straw every day. Nice to dig in and good for contact with the carer. Furthermore there are toys in the stable for distraction. The mother animals have nesting material in the farrowing and the piglets stay with their mother for four weeks. Over there, in addition to mother’s milk, they are also fed porridge to make the transition to solid food as smooth as possible.
The food we give to our pigs contains grains that have been harvested as much as possible in the immediate surroundings. Besides that, the feed is supplemented with liquid feed. A very tasteful feed with among others whey from cheese, potato steam peels and beer broth.
Efficient use of feed is essential to enable our next generation to enjoy a tasty piece of meat. By our way of keeping pigs in the stables, we have an optimal feed use. As a result we limit CO2 emissions!
In our stables we collect the manure and it is converted into green electricity in biogas.
